Top 10 Tips for Passing the ITIL Foundation Certification

Preparing for an ITIL Foundation certification and sitting the Foundation Exam is a fabulous way to start your ITIL journey. The ITIL foundation certification establishes the foundation for understanding the progress of an IT service management model. Whether your organization expects it, for personal resume advancement, or even to move into another type of IT position, an ITIL certification should be on your to-do list.

To assure you’re ready to pass it the first time around, we’ve prepared top tips.

1. Take Your Time to Get the Material

Take time to learn every question as most of the applicants miss out due to not reading it thoroughly. At points, there are some questions phrased as adverse, e.g. ‘which of the following is not a lifecycle module?’ If you miss out on the ‘not’ in this question, you might end up giving the incorrect answer. Besides, there will be complicated questions for which you need to highlight the keyword and solve it. So, understanding the point is stress before answering.

2. Answer Questions from the ITIL Prospect

Remember that the ITIL Foundation certification exam is checking your knowledge of the functions, processes, tools, parts, and overall concept described in the ITIL books.

Even though it may be appealing to give your answers based on what appears in your company, or from your work activity or ‘common sense,’ try to evade this. Always clarify questions from the prospect of the ITIL framework.

3. Study the templates from the lifetime and Skill

At the Standard level; representatives choose between the lifetime and Ability plans. Although it appears a long way off, don’t forget their modules at the Foundation level. While the Intermediate level requires an extensive understanding of every module, you still need to understand the basis at Foundation level. Put time into studying the streams’ modules, languages, and abbreviations.

4. Exercise Clear, Concise and Simple Language

Remember that when generating targets for your SLAs, OLAs, and UCs, the language you use should be simple and clear. If people are expected to follow your objectives, they must be able to know them first. This also means avoiding needless jargon and legalese.

However, you should keep the targets moderate, precise, and comprehensive. Keep your reporting simple, but make it indefinite — leave no room for uncertainty.

5. Be Assured of ITIL Terms and Definitions

ITIL contains a considerable amount of distinct terminology and definitions — making assured you have a good hold on these definitions is an excellent way to make sure you are prepared for the exam. Also, be aware of specific ‘keywords’ which are loosely related to different concepts within ITIL.

6. Think ITIL Only

Many participants answer as per the contemporary or previous organization standards, which can fail during the examination. Therefore while appearing for the ITIL foundation level exam, think only of ITIL and not your organization. This exam is to judge your knowledge of the ITIL functions, processes, and concepts, and not about how your organization executes ITIL.

7. Know How to Frame ITIL Concerning the Business Value.

You should be able to define how each phase of the ITIL lifecycle gives value in a business context. If you aren’t clear on this, refer to the ITIL books and make sure you’re knowledgeable before going into the exam.

8. Complete Practice Tests

Practice tests are a great way to measure your knowledge. They will explain areas you need to educate and prepare you for the actual exam. While working on ITIL practice tests, make sure that you are following the time. This will help you complete the practical exam on time. Most of the applicants fail the exam due to a lack of time; therefore, a practice can help you attain perfection.

9. Use Real-World Examples

Don’t be afraid to ask how ITIL correlates to your own work experience. Your tutor is likely to use real examples — feel easy to build your personal.

The questions required in the Foundation exam are intended to examine your understanding of ITIL theory as said in the publications and training. It is conceivable when answering these questions to overlook the small differences that real-world scenarios might create.

The exam treats the five ITIL lifecycle stages as discrete units, though in fact, they are very carefully interlinked. Continual Service Improvement, for example, runs through everything in ITIL.

10. Read Exam Essentials of Each Chapter

Compare your knowledge and refer the mind-maps to fill the knowledge gap. If required, you may revisit respective knowledge areas to refresh yourself.

These are ten quick tips to succeed in the ITIL Foundation exam. If you follow these tips, you will successfully pass ITIL Foundations the first attempt, have boasting rights forever, and be able to put a shiny new certification on your resume.
