Everything You Need To Know About Change Management in ITIL and Scrum

In current times, additional certifications so as ITIL, PRINCE2, COBIT, PMP, and SCRUM have been sought both by professionals and organizations for modifying an actual service or for creating a new service to the expected business standards.

The Benefits of SCRUM and ITIL:

ITIL can be defined as a broader prospect in terms of its scope, results, and implementations, and it features on IT Governance and improvement of processes to meet the customer’s expectations. SCRUM, on the other hand, can be connected in a little dimension to ITIL using the Service Transition stage and can be expressed as a more natural method for achieving quicker results. In short, SCRUM is very useful while working in dead-lines, active restoration of services in case of events and problems. It can also be used to provide a broader vision of the status of the project in discussion meetings of clients and stakeholders.

Similar to the game from which it was derived, SCRUM makes its mark when the team should work as a whole unit moving the projection to completion. It is seen to be beneficial in stressful situations or conditions. SCRUM promotes the use of intra-team work. The SCRUM team is usually expected to describe activities such as:

  • The contract for delivery and quality of the project regarding the service.Minimization of individual tasks and center as a group on team effort.Knowledge management and learning to join as a team.

  • ITIL is proficient in making different IT teams into a unique structure to work for a common purpose and constant improvement and modification of processes if needed for the regular delivery of service to the customers. ITIL provides for the smooth coordination between teams of different departments.

In ITIL, there are some core principles which have to be followed:

  • Roles and responsibilities have to be clearly defined, and training for required levels of growth in service has to be given to staff at regular times. All the processes have to be compulsorily documented to maintain consistency and consistent growth.Organizations can employ ITIL to draw a baseline from where they can plan, measure, and perform only the required processes for better customization of service.

  • Some companies have implemented both ITIL and SCRUM, and their projects have proved that both can co-exist provided the champions of both the certifications have a simple goal in achieving their targets. Both emphasize the demand for strong leadership for the project to make successful completion.

Factors Regarding Change in ITIL and SCRUM

When confronted with our day-to-day lives, we are always susceptible to change, and some persons regard upon change as a negative impact on their lives, while the confident person feels that the change agent will have a positive result.

Professionals and Organizations are spending in additional certifications so as ITIL Certification, PMP Certification, and SCRUM Certification not only for getting expertise in their domain area but also for creating a more favorable environment, where they can get their projects successful.

Now let us see the differences in Change Management between SCRUM and ITIL:

Change Management in ITIL:

  • Change Management comes in Service Transition stage of the ITIL Service Lifecycle. Its primary purpose is controlling the lifecycle of all to-be changes, and enabling the changes which will be useful to the project to be implemented or performed with least disturbance to the existing IT services.

  • Responding to the ever-changing demands of the customer following the business and request-for-change related to IT as well as assuring that all the changes are documented and evaluated, and the changes that are authorized by the concerned department are done as per the prioritization, planning, testing, and execution. They should also be documented as well as reviewed in a controlled way are some of the objectives of Change Management in ITIL.

  • The Change Management in Service Transition step of ITIL involves all changes that cover every type of architecture, tools, processes, metrics, and documentation and also the modifications engaged in IT services and other configuration items. The value of change management is that it is mandatory that all changes are recorded and proper management should be emphasized.

Change in SCRUM:

Similar to the shift explained above in ITIL, changes in SCRUM will be as follows:

  • It is necessary that all the team members in a project should have the required knowledge and understanding that the development processes performed according to SCRUM are intended for change. A project can become successful if the Organization creates recognition in its staff, such as maximization of benefits as a result of change management.

  • There could have been negative impacts caused in the beginning stages as a consequence of implementing SCRUM, but explaining the facts in a way which could reduce the hostile environment using meticulous processes in Change Management by SCRUM principles could lead to a positive outcome.

  • One of the benefits of SCRUM is acknowledging the different changes that can arise in the thoughts of customers or stakeholders or users about their needs. Leading among its best principles is that it is challenging for a stakeholder to explain all their requirements in the beginning stages of a project.

  • SCRUM always welcomes a Change utilizing short Sprints which tend to reflect feedbacks of customers on every Sprint deliverables. By this method, a customer has the opportunity to regularly interact with the concerned SCRUM team members, review the deliverables that are ready and make changes in the terms if they are needed in the next Sprint.
